transcription of the microfilmed 1870
enumeration of Marion County, South
Carolina, made just a few short years
after the end of the Civil War.
Over 20,000 individuals who resided in
the area that became Marion, Dillon, and
eastern Florence Counties are named and
fully indexed. Many alternative spellings
and enumerator errors are indexed.
Each of
the eighteen township enumerations is
preceded by a page showing: a map of the
township as drawn by P. Y. Bethea in his
1882 map of Marion County; a careful
description of the township boundaries as
they existed in 1870; names of towns,
communities, churches, post offices and
post office locations when known;
waterways and other historical or
significant landmarks within the
townships. The numbered microfilm sheets
are cross-referenced on each enumeration
page.
