1870 CENSUS
MARION COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA

By Members and Friends of the Pee Dee Chapter,
South Carolina Genealogical Society

Jo Church Dickerson, Editor; Helen B. Moody, Project Director

A full transcription of the microfilmed 1870 enumeration of Marion County, South Carolina, made just a few short years after the end of the Civil War.

Over 20,000 individuals who resided in the area that became Marion, Dillon, and eastern Florence Counties are named and fully indexed. Many alternative spellings and enumerator errors are indexed.

Each of the eighteen township enumerations is preceded by a page showing: a map of the township as drawn by P. Y. Bethea in his 1882 map of Marion County; a careful description of the township boundaries as they existed in 1870; names of towns, communities, churches, post offices and post office locations when known; waterways and other historical or significant landmarks within the townships. The numbered microfilm sheets are cross-referenced on each enumeration page.

677 pages, including a 68 page full name and place name index; 8.5x11, laminate cover with spiral coated-wire coil binding.

Writings of Philip Yancey Bethea
of Marion, South Carolina

Compiled by his great granddaughter, Barbara Bethea, this book contains Barbara’s transcription of original essays of P. Y. Bethea: Historical Genealogy of the Bethea family; History of Hofwyl School; Experience of P.Y. Bethea when Sherman Made His March through South Carolina in March, 1865; and Some Historical Facts Relative to the Deserters or Outlaws Who During the Civil War Were a Terror to the People of Upper Marion County, Now Dillon. A full name index, and photocopies of the original pages in the hand of P. Y. Bethea are included. We advise that there are instances of language usage of the time that we do not condone. However, we feel the historical significance of the writings of one of the principal local actors of that period outweighs other concerns, so the book is still in the original words of Philip Yancey Bethea (1849-1929). Many thanks to Barbara for allowing the chapter to make this piece of history more widely available.
