Records Building on the Square - Entrance on Godbold
Street R. Maxcy Foxworth, Jr., Archivist Hours: |
The Marion County Archives and History Center is located in the old Records Building at the corner of Main and Godbold on the Square beside the Courthouse in Marion. Built in 1903 of fireproof construction to house the offices of the Clerk of Court and the Judge of Probate, the building functioned as such until 1979. In that year those offices moved into new quarters, leaving many of the early records unattended in the old building. In 1997 an effort to establish a county archives was launched by Chapter Archivist R. Maxcy Foxworth, Jr., resulting eventually in funding being granted by County Council, and the Archives and History Center opened on 29 November 2000. All early County records, which begin in 1800, through the early 1900's are available here, along with the books, files, charts, etc. comprising the Pee Dee Chapter archives, offering a uniquely comprehensive research center. Hours are 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
