The Marion County Archives and History Center is located in the old Records Building at the corner of Main and Godbold on the Square beside the Courthouse in Marion. Built in 1903 of fireproof construction to house the offices of the Clerk of Court and the Judge of Probate, the building functioned as such until 1979. In that year those offices moved into new quarters, leaving many of the early records unattended in the old building. In 1997 an effort to establish a county archives was launched by Chapter Archivist R. Maxcy Foxworth, Jr., resulting eventually in funding being granted by County Council, and the Archives and History Center opened on 29 November 2000. All early County records, which begin in 1800, through the early 1900's are available here, along with the books, files, charts, etc. comprising the Pee Dee Chapter archives, offering a uniquely comprehensive research center.

are located in the same building with the old Marion County Records, and include:

Books, Family Files, Family Group Sheets, Charts, Newsletters, Maps.

The Chapter Library includes numerous published family histories; the earliest volumes of the South Carolina Law Reports which include many Appeals Court and Supreme Court cases from Marion and adjoining counties; many volumes of abstracts of records of Marion and some from adjoining counties of Williamsburg, Marlboro, Florence, Darlington, and several North Carolina counties, including Bladen, Columbus and Robeson; microfiche collections, including the index to the SC Death Certificates. We also have a large collection of periodicals, including the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research (SCMAR) the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, and most issues of newsletters from all the SCGS Chapters.

PHOTOCOPYING

Loose documents may be copied at 25 cents per page, or 50 cents per page if mailed. Copies cannot be made from the county record books (deeds, wills, etc.), but can be obtained from microfilm at the South Carolina Archives and History Center, or at the Family History Centers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Microfilm of the Plat Books is also available at the Francis Marion University library.

All publications offered by the Pee Dee Chapter, SCGS are available in person at the Marion County Archives.

Other items of historical and/or genealogical interest are sometimes offered at the Archives, in person or by mail (see below).
